Hi all - recently my resistance has sky rocketed. I’ve gone from injecting maybe a 1 unit to 10g ratio to probably 4 times that. In the morning I have always been more resistant than later in the day but sometimes I’m having to inject 15-18 units for a bowl of porridge which usually I’d do 7 or 8? In turn, I have gained so much weight so quickly, I feel like I’m basically injecting fat! I am going to try and cut carbs as I know I need to lower the amount of carbs I eat but I’m not a big eater, and it’s so frustrating when I inject what I think is the correct amount but end up spiking every single time! ☹️ anyone had similar or know what I could do to help? I don’t know why it’s suddenly increased, could it be because I’ve gained some weight? Thank you x

Got any T2s in your family tree? You could be developing the T2 weight gain/higher insulin resistance/weight gain (via high bg plus high insulin) cycle. I have a similar issue and though I have't managed to lose more than a couple of kgs I stopped the weight gain by low carbing. (Not drastically, probably less than 100g a day.) My dad is T2, as is my cousin on his side of the family. My mum was T1. (And going off topic, both my husbands parents had T2, while his sisters are prediabetic, so our children are doomed to get T2 if they overdo the carbs :)).

You've probably got dawn phenomena in the morning as well. Personally, I'd ditch the porridge....

How recent are you talking? You don’t have any sort of bug/infection or feel like your coming down with something?

I had something very similar last week but this week I’ve returned to normal. Normally my breakfast would have 37g of carbs & 4 units would cover it. Last week I had to up it to 6 units & I was still spiking to 11/12mmol and no matter how much cardio/walking or correction insulin I took it wouldn’t come back down. This week I’ve returned to normal, it’s soo strange and mega annoying

Nope nothing! It’s so annoying isn’t it, I’ve had bouts of it before due to hormones etc but the last month has been horrendous!

Aagh, looks like I've posted on the wrong thread of the two identical ones. @Jaylee , any chance you could merge the threads and move my post over??? (pretty please :)).

No diabetics at all in my family, just me :( I’m hoping this is just a temp thing and nothing that’s going to continue or get worse - just annoying that I don’t know what’s caused it! X

Havent changed any other medication that could cause resistance?

@briony1, it can be mega annoying. Funnily enough i eat oats every morning as well, I have 50G of oats made with half water half almond milk + a scoop of protein powder & 25g peanut butter. I wouldn’t say ditch the porridge because that’s exactly what I did swapping it for a crumpet & the result for me was exactly the same if not worse spikes. I find oats to be very stable if I make sure I bolus at least 20 minutes before.

Hi @briony1 ,

Are you still using Lantus?? Try changing your pen or cartridge.
But if you have increased any dosage to try & compensate, remember to give your advised previous dose..

Lantus for me can lose potency halfway down the cartridge every now & again.. It's like i forgot to inject, sometimes?

Hmm, well weight gain can cause increased insulin resistance, but you'd hope that would be gradual. I'd agree with @Jaylee 's suggestion to change over the lantus cartridge (just about to do that to mine because my levels are off this morning :)) but another possibility is that you have some sort of infection/illness, which would definitely push your needs up. (eg I've had urinary tract infections without any symptoms).

And sometimes things go back to normal and you never find out what caused the problem. But my basic checklist for high bgs

1) illness
2) check/change insulin and pens
3) check insulin sites are ok and not overused
4) less exercise than usual?

Good luck.
