Running with Type 1

Good morning guys and gals,

I have been type 1 for 4 years now and I have now decided that I want to take up running again. I used to run a lot when I was in school (14 years ago), moved to cycling when i was in college and then gave it all up when I learned to drive. I have a personal hatred for gyms because what you can do there for £30+ a month you can do for free in your garden or on the road.

My levels are in the norm but I have started to put on a little fat (a stone in the past 6 months), I have set my self a goal of completing a 5K run for Bupa in October, I have a training program set up ready to start but I have now wandered in the the uncharted territory of diabetes and fitness.

What advise can you give me on levels before and after training, carb loading before a big run and things to take with me i.e types of isotonic drinks, what to include in a hypo kit?

Many thanks in advance

Dan

Hi Dan, best advice is to test regularly. Before, during and after exercise. Depending on the intensity of your runs, the majority will see their BG levels drop afterwards. Have something like Lucozade with you if you're concerned about a hypo but if you test regularly, you should be ok. Be prepared to reduce insulin requirements both before and after exercise. Good luck.

Hi there Dan,

You might find it useful to take a look at this:http://www.teambloodglucose.com/TeamBG/Type_1_Diabetes_Alex.html (Refer to Tom if you are on MDI)
Also, if you check out the Type 1 exercise basics page, and watch the Type 1 case study, you may find that useful.

On the forum @ElyDave is an awesome runner with fantastic BG control - take a look at his profile and previous posts as a way of picking up some tips.;)

TeamBG will be booking up some more parkrun dates soon - you'll have to join us for a run!

Good luck with your training.:)
