Hi all I am new to the site but not diebetic myself but my stepfather......why am I angry?

A year ago my stepdad was finding it hard to walk long distances without his feet causing him pain and distress. The G.P told him it was bad circulation and stuck him on a variety of pills plus anti depressants he just shut himself down, getting down at the slightest thing. In October, myself and partner took him and my Mum on a short break and my partner noticed that my dad was drinking far more than him (he is a diebetic 10yrs plus) so advised him to contact his G.P. Result? Diebetic now for blood tests to sort out his levels and what medication etc.

They sent him for a full mot! with the diebetic nurse at the surgery and she noticed there was loss of sensation in his toes and one or two have gone black......

Why was this not checked in the first instance a year ago? grrrrr

sherie - welcome to the forum, I am sorry your stepdad had such a terrible experience, it sounds like a serious case of neglect to me or at least some communication error at the time of his first test?

I hope things are happening quick now that he has been diagnosed and that he receives all the medical care and attention that he needs, whats the verdict on those toes? Are they black because he bumped them and didnt notice due to numbness as a result of neuropathy? If the worst comes to the worst and the toes have to be amputated, dont despair, he can get better, he will be able to walk with appropriate footwear and hopefully he will be able to keep the rest of his feet and legs in good healthy condition.

Good that you have joined this forum, please ask any questions you like, there is usually someone who has just the right answer to help you along, a friendly and caring bunch they are those members in here.

Here is a link to tell you about the basics of this condition

I hope your stepdad has a bg meter and test strips, its important that he gets good control of his blood glucose levels.

All the best to you all

He is still waiting for his bg meter and meds, very recently diagnosed! He is on one lot of pills as his cholesteral came back really high too. He has more bloods being taken tomorrow. As for his toes it seems that it is under the nail and down one side he just thought it was to do with the 'poor circulation' which was suggested over a year ago. He did see a specialist but no suggestion of a diebetes check back then. He is such a mess at the moment trying to deal with it all. I personally think this is serious neglect too it should have been spotted earlier. Yes he will probably been diebetic but with the right care at the right time might have been able to hold the foot situation at bay for a while longer.

Thanks for the advice I will browse the site at length when I get used to this myself. As I said in previos post my partner is type 2 and he copes really well and I know how to handle the hypos and watch for the signs!

P.S there was not diebetic test in the first instance a year ago!

Best wishes
Sherie

Ah sherie that's no good, see if you can rush things along a bit.
And you want answers as to why this has not been picked up sooner. You need to take this up with the practice manager.

Good luck and let us know how you get on, tell your stepdad we are thinking of him.
