So far there are 11 spam messages on the boards from newbie 215 - maybe someone with admin rights can delete them?

Re: Spam on the boards

As I explained to Anna a short while ago, it's difficult to weed out this spam without human intervention. A fully automated spam protection system would likely take legitimate posts and mark them as spam, which is really not what we want to do. Many of the spammers who register here are automated robots who will just register on any large forum and post away. I'm looking in to methods of preventing this that won't hinder legitimate users in any way and my recent effort with our upgraded CAPTCHA form seems to have had zero effect... Back to the drawing board.

One of the threads was, well, obscene for a family medical forum,

Could it possibly be a former member? How can an automated robot register :? but then again I only know the basics of how to use my computer. Hope you find something that works, I hate to think what 'forum nasties' could be coming up.

The spammers using the robots sub the captcha solving out to humans of all things. The robot script gets the captcha pictures and posts them to the inbox of the human solver who gets the solution back to the robot as fast as possible before the captcha session times out (That's if you've set up your form to have time-outs). The robot on receipt of the text back from the human auto pastes it into the text field and submits it.

Devious beggars these spammers.

and here's a howto on setting up a robot solver for your spamming service:

the only real way to stop hit and run spammers I've seen so far involves all new members having to have their first few posts held for a moderator check before they appear live.

I'm doubting it.

Paul's explanation on how spammers make it on to the forum is quite good, as it details how they get past the captcha stage. It'll take a lot of work to stop this happening, but it's worth a go.

Re: Spam on the boards

You have to be careful with the automatic spam catcher programs. A couple of years ago I reported a spam here and got banned, for - yes: spam. It took me a few days to be allowed back. :silent:

Re: Spam on the boards

Just a quick update for you all: I've added in another anti-spammer protection measure about 10 minutes ago. Can't guarantee it'll work, but it's definitely worth a go :)

Re: Spam on the boards

Lovely to go on line and view latest posts......clogged up with at least 20 about cheap kitchens. Using my iPod but went through as many as I could reporting them as spam. You know, it really annoys me. I don't have access to a pic at the moment to follow the instructions for reporting. Hope these losers get wiped out of our lovely community. Good luck moderators.

Re: Spam on the boards

It is annoying, but the moderators are working as hard as they can! 7am is a popular time for spam I've found, it coincides with me logging on to procrastinate as I'm usually in work by then haha

Re: Spam on the boards

Can we not have 'kitchens' as a naughty word so the posts get blocked? Not many legitimate post titles contain the word and if we know not to use it then there would be no problems.
Why we all want new kitchens is beyond me!!
