Specialist Foot Care

Heard on the radio this morning that 80 amputations a week are carried out and DUK stated that 80% of these could be avoided if there were more specialist foot teams that could recognise the early signs of foot ulcers etc. Dont they realise that figure could be nearer 100% if the NHS stopped pushing the 'eat starchy carbs with every meal message' ?

That is horrific. I am a typei diabetic and have neuropathy and have scarring from a pressure sore which happened about 8 years ago, but i think i have been lucky as i see a Podiatrist every fortnight and can call when ever i need them, so i feel quite glad they are doing a good job.
But i feel there needs more Podiatrist.
My mother in law is a type2 and has to pay to see a Podiatrist, i get my free and i think all diabetic should be offered this.

Some posters say just refer yourself to the Podiatry at your local hospital but as the article says they do not exist in all areas.

I do not have access to any foot care unless I go on a waiting list to see a local Chiropodist with a dodgy reputation if other patients are to be believed.

I pay to see one every six weeks for prevention as opposed to treatment, not cheap but I consider it money well spent and she does much more than the annual foot check we are supposed to get.

Just an update on foot care in Medway Kent. This is the first year that my partner has not received a foot care check, I take it that the same now applies in Medway that they have no foot care specialists available. Should this be raised with the clinic to find out what the alternative is, or the local doctors? :x

If you or someone you know was getting footcare and are not now i would talk to your GP.
It may be worth ringing the clinic you were at just to see if they have mislaid your oppointment
