spikes in the morning

Hello,
have just today joined the forum. I was diagnosed type 2 back in February this year. Since then I have adopted a low GI eating plan. I took my glucose reading at midnight last night 7.1 five hours after eating, no snacks in between. Then retook it at 8.45am this morning it had gone up to 8.1. I read about the dawn phenomenon and the other which I cant remember name of, but any ideas how I can avoid this without resorting to taking metformin?
