Despite previous studies suggesting the contrary, statins (cholesterol-lowering drugs) may not prevent blood clots (venous thrombo-embolism) in adults, according to a large analysis by international researchers published in this week's PLOS Medicine.

In an accompanying Perspective article, Frits Rosendaal from the Leiden University Medical Center in The Netherlands (uninvolved in the study) argues that even if the study cannot provide definite answers to the statin question, some tentative conclusions can be drawn. He says: "Firstly, that for the association between statins and venous thrombosis the methodologically strongest analysis shows at most a very small effect. Secondly, if we do not wish to discard the possibility of a beneficial effect for the whole class, any such effects are limited to rosuvastatin."

Cowboyjim, good post. I fully expect that the pharma co's will be along quick smart to rubbish that study.
I do though think that the days of statins are numbered, as I have said before they affect muscles badly and the heart is a great big muscle/pump, is it not !
I had a heart ransplant 18 years ago and suffered from statins for 2 of those years, depite desperate attempts by my consultant at Papworth to have me take them over the years.
The sample size of 100,000 does give the report a fair bit of clout unlike some of the disputed studies of 60 odd participants.

Keep well

I was on statins 7 years at the time when I received a trauma to my leg - the statins did not prevent me receiving three very serious thrombus

Commiz to you both... it is a subject I still look out for even tho I chose not to take them after a short time.
I was having a chat with my GP today in fact who I thought would say to me let's get you back on the statins since my cholesterol was 4.9%, that was OK he said but the LDL and HDL were each a little higher than he would like, but since all else was OK on my annual test (phew) he said no statins for me.... an enlightened man! He did not push nor did he disparage what I said I had learned from teh web and of course this forum. 8)
