Strange physical/mental sensation

Hi folks

I've been experiencing a slightly strange sensation and am wondering if it has something to do with my blood sugar, so I came to the best diabetes forum on the net for advice (I think, anyway!).

Before I continue: I have had a blood test for a certain kind of diabetes which came up negative. However, I have had these little experiences which concern me, all I think are food/drink intake related:

1. I had crisps, a flapjack, and a can of coke for an evening meal (car had broken down)
2. Christmas day, had the meal then drank port steadily over a few hours
3. One lunch time I had a starbucks coffee and a cake, nothing else.

A few hours after each of the above scenarios I felt a little weak and had a strange sensation in my head, it was a physical and mental feeling of sudden discontent and panic. Very hard to describe. The first time it happened I didn't sleep all night, I was shaky and quite panicked. The last time it happened I got over it quickly. An hour or so after each of these sensations, I have started to urinate a lot and not stopped for the next 24 hours.

I'm confident it is due to irresponsible eating, perhaps caffined drinks have a bad effect on me; but I am wondering what specifically is going on. Is it something to do with the quality of blood reaching my brain? I understand the mental panic feeling could be generated by a physical sensation, even though it feels chemical based.

I have always had to be careful when out in the sun as my blood sugar can drop fast, but it's usually only a feeling of weakness, which for me is quickly solved by food. This is something new! Sorry for the long explanation. I would love to hear any thoughts.

Thank you

Dave

Hello Dave,

You really need to beg, steal or borrow a blood glucose test meter so that you can test during these episodes. Any reading below 4mmol/l is usually considered hypoglycemic, although, it's possible to get 'false hypo' symptoms above this level.

If you do see low readings, then reactive hypoglycemia is a possible cause.

All the best,
timo.

Hi Timo

Thanks so much for the insight. I read the page on reactive hypoglycemia and it does seem to correlate with my experiences, so it's definitely a possibility. I looked into test meters and have managed to find one relatively cheap, so later this week I'll be prepared!

The bit on wiki:
...consequence of excessive insulin release triggered by the carbohydrate meal but continuing past the digestion and disposal of the glucose derived from the meal...
is interesting as I have acid reflux a lot, and I digest food quite quickly/poorly. So an abundance of insulin would make sense.

In summary, thanks, Timo, I now have the tools to investigate further, and knowledge to hopefully avoid it in future. Wish I'd asked a long time ago!

Thank you

Dave

It would be highly unusual for you to have a 'hypo' after eating as food will increase your blood glucose levels not drop them.

What you describe sounds more like a panic or anxiety attack. I would see your doctor and tell him/her about your symptoms.
