Sugar tax comes into effect in the UK

But the current news is reporting that the amount of money expected from this tax has been halved as manufacturers have reduced sugar content of many drinks to get below the threshold.
Arguably - the tax will do what it is supposed to do, - reduce the amount of sugar being consumed even if the outcome has been acheived via a different route.
 
I was unaware that that other people felt the same way as I do about artificial sweeteners. It is a nice surprise. There is the thorny issue of the new gen sweeteners such as Stevia. In my opinion anything that has to go through multiple processes between plant and final product (40, I beleive it is for Stevia) cannot be considered a natural product, added to this is the fact that Stevia is sometimes 'cut' with other sweeteners is the Big Food deceit I mentioned earlier.
I have a mistrusting relationship with sweetners. I'll admit, I like the occasional sweet thing. I did like ***** sweets until I was diagnosed, but I haven't touched any 'natural' sugars since. People think I'm strange for not joining them for desserts at resaurants ("just have more insulin"), but I know that it's just non-nutrition that would eventually kill me. Instead, I've tried sugar free versions of things. I've bought diet mixers, but either aspartame or acesulfame k gives me banging headaches. All sugar alcohols tend to rip me up inside ('mild laxative effects', my ****). And stevia/steviols are expensive and, as you say, often mixed with xylitol, which is a sugar alcohol. I have tried baking with stevia (usually something made with almod/coconut flour or chia) and it's alway a bit..bleurgh.
I've concluded that there is no substitute for sweet and to just try and forget what sweet things are like.

Aye, the only sweet thing I have these days is a very small quantity of berries with Fage. I gave up all fruit for months but on discovering Fage I am now having it once or twice a week but I no longer crave the sweet stuff.
Crackers and Crisps however are something I really still miss, havn't found a satisfactory crunchy alternative yet.
