as an HGV driver when I when onto insulin(Dec 2010)the law was that you have to surrender HGV 2012the law changed up until Dec 2010 I was employed by TESCO'S as an HGV driver they the pensioned me out(£45 a month) having only worked 5 years this I thank them for.
Now HGV driving for agencies one put me forward to Tesco and had a very prompt reply saying we can't have him driving for us as to the resins he had to leave .DVLA + there Doctors have past me fit to drive
But Tesco Say NO
strange when you next go into Tesco look "charity of the year DIABETES UK"

Sorry to hear of your work problems. Tesco has been mentioned before on here recently (as a charitable organisation regarding diabetes) and well, it didn't go down too well with a few members
All the best for the future and I sincerely hope you can find employment elsewhere maybe looking into another avenue by retraining at a college or on line ? Good luck and with my very best wishes. RRB

With all due respect, Retraining isn't the issue here, other than TESCO's need to retrain their thinking re use of insulin users as HGV drivers!

Most agencies don't bother about me being on insulin I have a HGV and they send me here there and every were but some of the big boys ie: TESCO'S say no..... when working for agencies it dose not affect insurance policies of the company you are working for,
1 company told me as long as DVLA say you are fit to drive and follow the rules we have no problem with you driving for us, but there work is odd days same with most places and you have to wait for a phone call to tell you when a and were you are working some times an hour before you have to be there, this plays havoc with my diabetes as 1 day you can start at 0600 and the next at 1500, take the work or don't get paid (so I don't get paid)
my heath and the safety of other road users comes first . Some shifts can be 15 hours and don't forget driving there and back home as well (for the people how don't know the law says I must have a 11 hour break between shifts and twice a week can shorten it to 9 hours but they don't count getting there and back as your working day. )
BUT THE BIG BOYS (TESCO'S ETC ) ARE FULL OF IT ? WE WILL TREAD ON ANY BODY THAT WE DON'T WANT .:(

I don't see retraining as an issue, it was just another option to be addressed if the OP wished to do so, sometimes we have to to fight and try and to carry on, other times we have to think less of the 'little people' and try to move on. and think what may be best for ourselves. I replied because TESCO was mentioned, yet again.

ps @TEMPLER I hope my post didn't offend you in any way it wasn't a negative affect.

Hi, there have been quite a few posts from different members regarding discrimination in the work place and so unfairly too. Good luck, but many have been :banghead: :arghh:against a brick wall and it is not right. Best wishes RRB

You are somewhat new to using insulin, so......

Keep yrself safe when driving for many hours.......either keep bg slightly higher which may or might not, rrisk developing some nerve damage 5-10yrs later, eat a very low carb diet with protein and fat or do yrself a great big favour and get a cgm or make sure you bg test every 1.5hrs.

no you haven't offended me at al,l but all I say is if you control your diabetes and are an HGV driver, who are they to say I can't .
as all driver's have to see 2/3 doctors how are diabetic specialists to get your licence back what right do people with knowledge of diabetes say you can not drive

I agree with you, but diabetes, as I said in another post, has been discriminated in the workplace, quite a bit from the posts that I have seen, this is the 21st century and not 70 years ago, it is disgraceful the way people are treated, fight it all the way if you can and want to, but always keep other options open. Best of luck RRB

YESTERDAY (THURSDAY 16/4) having seen a job centre plus advert for an HGV driver which also said NO agencies .
I when for a job interview & HGV driving assessment past with flying colours, told them I was diabetic on insulin and have to do a blood test every 2 hours when driving. The reply was how do you do that, so I did a blood test in front of him and to my surprise that's no problem with us. Then offered me a full time job & I start on Monday full time They are also one of the big company's with over 400 lorry's
Thank you to all that replyd to me Dale(TEMPLER).

Have you informed your agency that you have insulin dependant diabetes? I have just read another msg on this thread where an agency has refused to offer work to an HGV driver because of the risk factor.

TEMPLER said "I when for a job interview & HGV driving assessment past with flying colours, told them I was diabetic on insulin and have to do a blood test every 2 hours when driving." so I think that would be a Yes.
