Do you have to use the specific brands test strips? Specifically am looking at the Accu check aviva monitor and BG Star test strips as there is £10 difference in boots

The cheapest test strips are those that are used in the SD Codefree meter, I believe they are around £7 for 50 strips.

You will find that meters will only use their dedicated test strips, even with meters from the same manufacturer they have to use their own strips.

I have three types of Glucomen meter and still have to buy three individual sets of strips.

This is how the manufacturers make their money. They often give away the meters and they make money, because you have to keep going back to them for the strips, so they can charge what they like. Its a bit like having your hands tied.

I am fortunate in the fact I got a meter free from my GP and get a repeat prescription for 100 test strips per month This appears to be a rarity

Thanks, yes it was amusing (!) that the monitor starter kit was half the price of 50 strips . Will look into getting the SD monitor - I assume it's no more accurate or inaccurate than other monitors in the market?

The SD Code

Is a popular choice amongst forum users and they appear to be quite happy with it.

I think test meter manufacturers work along the same line as printer manufacturers, sometimes the cost of the replacement ink can be double the price you initially paid for the printer. Once you have bought one you are tied to them for replacement inks or consumables

No meter is 100% accurate as a finger prick test is not the same as a blood test from a vein which is far more accurate but the Codefree is as good as any other for an idea of what BG levels are

I use it as my second monitor and its fine. Doesn't look very fancy but I think its accurate. The price is great comparing to other strips on the market
