Is it possible to test to see what foods effect my BG without waiting for 2 hours? Can I test after say 30mins? I appreciate it won't be a true reading but would it be OK as a comparison?
I am testing but the trouble is a lot of meals have more than one component so I don't know if the carrots are having an effect or the humous, the bergen bread or the soup, milk or the oatibix etc., etc., The only solution I can see is to have one thing at a time and then test 2hrs later. But thats a lot of small snacks spread out over a very long time.
Yes it's OK to test after 30 mins or an hour.
I think the theory is that after 2 hours your BG level should have returned to it's pre meal state.
I think though anytime within that 2 hours it shouldn't spike so testing before 2 hrs is up would give you an indication of spiking.
Someone more experienced will probably come along soon and clarify it.
Thanks Stephen for correcting me.
I thought I had read somewhere that you could test after 30 mins but maybe that was in a different scenario. (probably to do with me eating chocolate )
I will get the hang of this sometime.
Thats great. An hour is better than 2 for my purposes. I've only had my meter a while and am trying to find out whats good and bad for my BS before my hols - hoping to leave my meter behind whilst still being careful.
Thanks Stephen for correcting me.

Wasn't correcting you, was just saying what the established thinking was. I sometimes test after 30 mins. None of it is really very scientific. What matters most is being consistent, and doing it at the same time after you eat, every time.
I get the part about being consistent with the times and the hour being on the downward side of the peak / spike - thanks Stephen.
Will still have to do 2hr testing after 'meals' to keep track of recovery.
Just found out after waiting two hours that a small apple is OK. If I can have bananas then I have the makings of a healthy quick breakfast and it's breakfasts that i am struggling with. Havent found a good cereal yet - but after reading forum posts it probably doesn't exist!
you can test at 1 hour as that is supposedly the peak for food (think someone has already said that already).
Also sometimes your BGL doesn't stablise for longer. My BGLs can be higher at 3 hours than 2 hours... mind you I have a stomach problem.
But just keep testing regularly and you soon learn what foods work best for you. I find carb vegetables are not good for my BGLs as I can either go too low with BGL or too high... I don't get a good reading usually. Whereas with rice and other wholegrains I fair better.
