The Diabetic (a poem)

O pity the lone diabetic

Who contemplates a life ascetic

And listens to advice dietic

And complications prophetic,

And knows that they are not bathetic;

Tries to avoid all food synthetic,

Whose cooking skills are yet pathetic;

Who is not naturally athletic,

Whose fitness moves are not balletic

(And whose poor heart is arrhythmetic).

But though its charms are not magnetic,

I’ll keep my diabetes ethic;

I’ll track my BGs arithmetic,

And make my lifestyle less frenetic.

I’ll try to make low-carb aesthetic

(80% choc is anaesthetic).

When forum threads become splenetic,

I’ll try to be more sympathetic

To erring fellow-diabetic,

And pardon every post mimetic.

If I can’t be non-diabetic

(For my condition is genetic)

With luck I’ll be non-diuretic,

And try to keep my life poetic.

I once had a date with a Nurse
Who's attitude came over quite terse
With a cough & a splutter at full fat & butter
They carried her off in a hearse....

That's not the end of her feat
She told me the Doc thought me sweet
I passed his "advances" with a meter and lancet
Cutting loose with a low A1C..
