The Diabetic (a poem)
O pity the lone diabetic
Who contemplates a life ascetic
And listens to advice dietic
And complications prophetic,
And knows that they are not bathetic;
Tries to avoid all food synthetic,
Whose cooking skills are yet pathetic;
Who is not naturally athletic,
Whose fitness moves are not balletic
(And whose poor heart is arrhythmetic).
But though its charms are not magnetic,
I’ll keep my diabetes ethic;
I’ll track my BGs arithmetic,
And make my lifestyle less frenetic.
I’ll try to make low-carb aesthetic
(80% choc is anaesthetic).
When forum threads become splenetic,
I’ll try to be more sympathetic
To erring fellow-diabetic,
And pardon every post mimetic.
If I can’t be non-diabetic
(For my condition is genetic)
With luck I’ll be non-diuretic,
And try to keep my life poetic.
