HI

Went for my checkup today and it was more like a meeting with the chuckle brothers!!! I have now learned how to nod in the right places, and go to sleep with my eyes open.

As i have been on Byetta for 3 months now they said that my 2.5 stone weight loss is to much to quick and that i am damaging myself low carbing.

They also said its not about following a diabetic diet, its a healthy diet i need and as long as am not above 10 2 hours after mealtimes then this is ok. I asked again do you mean bs 10 after 2 hours and she said oh yes then they will drop to the normal 7 by the time you have your next meal

She also said that a little of what you fancy is not gonna do me any harm in the long term and bs a bit high every so often is better than high all the time. When i said bs that are in the normal range must be better, she said well you are diabeteic dear so its gonna be hard to keep them below 7!!!!

Then i got told off for testing bs to often to find out how food effects me and that am bein fanatical about having diabetes and that am not eating the right carbs in my diet.

When i said come on now surely my results speak for themselves Hb1ac 6.9 she then said and i quote "well its not a true reading is it when you diets not right"

Oh the joys, i now feel like churchill the nodding dog, i cant win for doin wrong but am sticking to what is working for me as my weight is down, bp is down, pulse is down and bs are bloody fantastic and this is from someone back in dec 08 who had been in denial for over 5 yrs and ate what i wanted

Julie,

You are proving them wrong, so don't expect a vote of thanks from them. Nobody knows your body as well as you do so you just carry on doing what you know is right for you!!

Shared Decision Making is an interesting principle where lifestyle needs are met by the treatment both you and your healthcare teams decide upon and should be considered an important element of the Choice agenda.

I think it's time for a patient revolution and we should be insisting that our health care teams consider us the lead members of our health care teams.

Had a pretty similar consultation with my husband's GP today.

Got told that low carbing is not advised for diabetics. That testing is unnecessary and leads to too much worrying and that an Hba1c of 6.1% is perfect (taken 4 months ago now) and to try and attain non-diabetic level is damaging to a diabetic and means you've gone too far and too low.

That despite him BS being between 9-15 most of the time, since his Hba1c is perfect, that it's not the norm for him and therefore is ok to experience.

We also went because his eyesight has deteriorated and his old pre-diagnosis tiredness symptoms have returned but were just told to get him an eye test and that since he had no other symptoms to point to it being an out of control diabetes issue, she didn't think changing his medication was in order. 'Tiredness can be attributed to many other things so let's just leave a review for now...' Great.

I wanted to poke my (or maybe hers) eyes out by the end of our alloted 10 minutes. She obviously had the God complex about her.

I have had this from 3 different GP's within the past 6 months. Not happy and nor was my normally laid-back husband either.

So, sorry to slightly hijack your thread but we feel your annoyance!!

They ARE trying to kill you. Don't let them!

This is now in the official NICE recommendations

• avoid pursuing highly intensive management to levels of less
than 6.5%.

Actuaries have decided how much money you will save the NHS by dying early
