Also re Yudkin, the UK wasn't the US and this article repeats the selective info given by Gary Taubes and repeated by Teicholz .
The Medical research council commissioned researchers including Sir Richard Doll to replicate Yudkin's research. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC487524/?page=1
see also http://qjmed.oxfordjournals.org/content/102/2/81
The replicated research failed to confirm Yudkins findings
and from Geoffrey Cannon, who had a recent input into the recent Brazilian guidelines (which most people seem to approve of), there is the story of the introduction of dietary guidelines in Britain against opposition from government and 'big food' This is a different perspective to the one from a US point of view.

Didn't have time yesterday but was rereading the links so slightly edited, edits in italics.
this quote from 2nd of Cannon's pieces shows the irony of comparing the US with the UK
From 1981 :What if I were to tell you' I said (ie Cannon said) 'that a report originally commissioned by government has concluded that the food we typically eat in Britain is a major cause of killer diseases, starting with heart disease, and that this report is being suppressed by government because of its implications for the food industry?'
