Three days on LCHF diet

I've just started to follow a LCHF diet because my bmi is over 50 and I am type1. I've started to radically change my life. It's about time!! I have lost 6 pounds in three days...is this normal? I am delighted, of course, but would be grateful for some reassurance. Is this too much?

I am also a little concerned about how much of an impact the fat in the new diet will have on my cholesterol and liver. Can anyone give me some advice?

I coped well with the starvation feelings to be honest, as I planned a few really really busy work days to distract me from it all! Thanks so much for the links...I will take a look definitely. I'm snacking on olives and peanuts and babybel mostly. I hope this is right...

Well done!

And good results already. :D

I wouldn't worry about the fats for a while, if ever.
Adding stuff like olive oil to food is deeply satisfying, and you will become full long before you eat so much it affects your weightloss.

If you read the forum, you will find many people who are both surprised and delighted to find that their cholesterol improves on LCHF. There are always a few exceptions, but they are rare, usually cholesterol rises for a while (weeks) while the body adapts, then falls to a new, lower level, and stays there.

If you are still worried about the fat, choose healthy options like olive oil, coconut butter and fish oils.
I eat all of those. Plus butter, cream, cheese and the fat on meat, and my cholesterol was exactly where I wanted it, last test.

Ok, it's been nearly 5 days now and I would KILL for carbs. I'm even having chocolate and cake cravings which I don't usually go for. It's hard to keep on the straight and narrow right now...

Hi,

I am one of the success stories for improved cholesterol on low carb high fat.

I had my latest results this morning. My full lipids across the board have improved each test I've had since starting.

HDL 2.2 up from 1.56 :):)
LDL 3.0 down from 4.0 :):)
Triglycerides 0.58 down from 1.25 :):)
TC/HDL ratio 2.5 down from 3.9 :):)
Trigs/HDL ratio 0.19 down from 0.8 :):)

I eat and cook in butter, I eat mounds of cheese, mayonnaise, cream, bacon, eggs, and I fry in Rapeseed Oil. My liver function tests are normal, and my ALT (fatty liver indicator) is in the middle of the normal range. I also lost 4stones between January and October, now maintaining. It works for me.

If the carb cravings are bad, then the only way I know to kill them, is to eat fat - while simultaneously dropping carbs low enough to get under your personal carb limit.

I know you want to lose weight, but a few days of eating extra fat will stop the cravings dead. Then you can adjust the fat to a level that allows weightloss, while keeping you from eating the furniture.

I'm a really high BMI (very morbidly obese) but I've been eating less than 50 g carbs a day, and eating cheese, cream in coffee and adding cream or cheese to most evening meals, and having a desert of berries and cream, for months. And I'm slowly losing weight without hunger and misery. I'm not aiming at fast loss. When you've been this size, you risk going down like a deflated weather balloon, if you take it too fast!

And if you want cake, then this thread has many gorgeous recipes that are perfectly acceptable on a low carb diet. They need some specialist shopping (ground almonds, etc.) but are worth trying.
My favourite is the 3 minute mug cake.
Delicious. And guilt free. I can eat them regularly and sustain my slow weightloss.

Thank you! It is very reassuring just to know that others have been through similar things. I weighed again today and put on a couple of pounds, despite absolute strictness to LCHF principles. Very frustrating. I'm really trying and I know it's only been a week, but I feel I need results quick to stay motivated. I guess I am eating too many snacks outside of meals. Any advice about salted peanuts?? I could eat them all day unfortunately!

The good news is that the salt in the peanuts won't do any harm. Or the fat.
But too much may just cause a bit of salt water retention.

How many are you eating?

I suppose a common sense answer is that 1 or 2 handfuls a day would be fine. 8 oz (200g) would be too much. Too much salt or carb may cause water retention, which is your 2lb gain.

For the first few days, your best bet is to really bring the carbs down, and avoid the scales, while eating fat to satisfaction.

Have a look at this thread, it may help:

And you will see that we have ALL been through it! ;)

it's like someone waved a magic wand as far as BG goes:) initial loss is 1/2 fluid, it will taper off :(

Well done! Stick at it, the cravings will go; I was a breadoholic and went cold turkey, no problem for me, I think the benefits far outweighed the costs, and I felt so much better in myself it was easy to let go of the carbs. Try to think differently about it, instead of thinking of what you have given up, try to think of what you have gained. Keep it up!
