Hi Pebbles,

I've always gone for normal travel insurance companies as I find them much cheaper than the specialist diabetes providers. I'm currently with Bupa. They are aware that I am diabetic. It did not affect my premium price at all. I've found that some of the budget providers do put a hefty premium on if you have pre-existing medical conditions, however.

The thing to be careful of is whether a mainstream provider covers replacement of insulin & other diabetes stuff. Many will cover you with diabetes, often without any loading, but most will exclude any diabetes related issues from your cover, including replacement of lost or stolen medication.

I have used Flexicover for the last few years. I've shopped around & they're not the cheapest out there, but they cover more "dangerous" activities at a higher level. e.g. I waterski regularly on holiday, most companies only cover "incidental" waterskiing, I also go white water rafting & many again only cover up to grade 2 rapids, I'll raft on grade 3 & 4.

They are a specialist medical condition provider. You pay a basic fee for cover that accepts you as a diabetic but doesn't include cover for diabetes & a separate medical fee to cover the diabetes side of things (which adds about 100% to the cost in my case).

I am 43, have annual worldwide cover including USA & winter sports & it cost about £140 all in last year (I'm due to renew soon).

I travel frequently & to some unusual destinations, so cover for my insulin is vital.

Hope this helps.

I have a Barclays Additions Active bank account which for a charge of £15 per month not only provides full mobile phone cover, full home start car breakdown cover, interest free overdraft and extended warranty with accidental damage, but also includes full travel insurance for me and my family they are aware that I am diabetic and have sent me a letter to acknowledge this and that I am still fully covered including for anything related to diabetes!!
Definitely worth taking up if you're with Barclays or thinking of changing your bank account!! There's other benefits that come with it that I've not mentioned as well!! It saves me loads each year especially as travel insurance for the four of us for our trip to China would cost more than £100 if I bought separately!!

I've used EHIC Plus for the last few years. They cover pre-existing medical conditions and are very cheap.
