There is a lot of talk in other autoimmune diseases of the drug LDN (low dose naltrexone )

As people with type1 and their relatives are at much greater risk of getting these such as cealiac and MS is anybody taking it?

I note that Dr Bernstein's book also recommends Low Doses of Naltrexone to reduce carb craving and overeating.

Naltrexone is used in combination with other medicines to help those who are dependent on drugs such as heroin (opioids), overcome their addiction. Naltrexone acts by blocking receptors in the brain to block the action of opioids. Individuals will no longer experience the euphoria previously experienced after taking opioids.

Naltrexone can only be used to help those who have not taken opioid drugs for at least 7 - 10 days.

Just watched a video on youtube for Naltrexone and it does seem like a wonder drug. My 11 yr old son Andrew suffers with both T1 diabetes and Coeliac disease and given the choice when asked if he could get rid of one, he always replys Coeliac. Because he can't eat the same as everyone else and he finds that, more of a hinderence and feels isolated. Lets hope it has no side effects, its something i would definately consider.
Thanks for the link pgy,

In England and Scotland attempts are being made to get research done on LDN. Given the results being achieved in many autoimmune diseases why isn't some research being persued for Type 1.

Penn State are recruiting children 6 to 17 for study of the use of LDN in Crohn's Disease

http://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/N...hn%27s&rank=12

The study is "The Efficacy of Low Dose Naltrexone Therapy in Children With Crohn's Disease"

The principal investigator is Prof Jill Smith Past president of The American Pancreas Association

There is research partly funded by JDRF in UK which shows a link between Crohn's and Type 1. See this announcement from Cambridge University

Here is the results of previous research done at Penn State in this area

Eighty-nine percent of patients exhibited a response to therapy and 67% achieved a remission (P < 0.001)

Lots of my thyroid forum buddies are taking LDN, it seems to help with all kinds of autoimmune things. Though it is early days yet.

Sadly, as there's no money to be made from it, it's unlikely that any big pharma company will want to do clinical trials needed to prove its efficacy.

Well found a GP who would prescribe for my daughter. She has been on it for about 3 months now and results are miraculous. Her total daily insulin requirements are down by up to 50% and her overnight bgl have been consistently sticking in the 4.5 to 6 range even when basal dropped to 20% for several hours.

We haven't seen anything like this since honeymoon period. Originally endo said it happens occasionally where people see endogenous insulin production for a little while. Endo is now taking notice as this has been going on for a number of months. Endo feels the immune system attack appears to have stopped and has ordered cpeptide and antibody tests to see whats going on. He even used the word remission a number of times.

Anyway I don't expect the damage already caused to heal but if we were able to maintain even some pancreatic function that would be a miracle.

In communicating with doctors who prescribe LDN for other autoimmune conditions their reaction is often "Yes it works for other autoimmune conditions so why wouldn't you expect it to work for Type 1."
