Type 1 Diabetes and Traveling the World

What a great thread for me! Minnie, am doing the Lares trail as the Inca was booked up by the time we booked but I agree that hypo symptoms are tricky to spot when at altitude I would think or are just plain knackered!

Frio bags are a must Carly, have used them for years, just wet or soak the inner bags every day and it'll keep vials, pens etc; cool and no need to put in the fridge/ freezer. Mine came from Owen Mumford.

Zip lock bags could be handy too to keep everything dry in addition to beastly poncho I've been told to take! Am overusing exclamation marks today!!

I've heard of Frio wallets but have never actually seen one. Are they just ice-pack type bags that you have to refrigerate the night before to keep insulin cold the next day?
They are gel pouches that you just soak in water which activates the gel which keep them cool for a couple of days. You don't need a fridge which is the whole point of them. They are reusable. I had 4 of these when I did a 3 month trip in Central America back in 2009 and they are really good. Can't recommend them enough. A big one will just about squeeze 10 pens in although that is pushing it a bit.

Have a fantastic time. Apart from being ill I really enjoyed how varied the Lares trail was. I hope you have a lovely time and good luck that your blood glucose levels behave themselves!

I would have been lost without my Frio wallets. Perfect for travelling.

Thanks Carly for sharing your experience. I spent last summer backpacking in Asia. A bit of planning but can be done, even with t1
Hi Ewelina, I'm thinking of going to Vietnam next year, only for three weeks but am worried about food a bit - I cannot really eat rice and am generally on low carb diet with occasional portion of buckwheat and a slice of rye bread... thanks for your advice!

I'm going to Vietnam in July Message me in September so I can let you know about the food

Just spoke to my hairdresser who is Korean and she recommended bitter melon, apparently native also to Vietnam. I'd be interested to know if it is easily available there and what you think...
also tangles sea weed in thick sheets - she says it's full of vitamins and good for diabetics... x

If you want to try it sooner they sell it in ASDA and Tesco in the frozen section. It's also known as Karela and Bitter Gourd but it's all the same stuff. International food shops sell it too. We source ours from an Indian shop in our local market.

It's supposed to increase insulin sensitivity and there have been a few studies showing that. In fact we're currently embarking on on one at work!
