Type of diabetes
Type 1
Hi everyone, i'm sorry this may be a long one, but i'm still uncertain as to whether i'm type 1 or type 1.
I'l do a timeline of events.

First pregnancy 2010, aged 18, i drank loads of lucozade to help my morning sickness (probably about 500ml a day until the last 2 months.
Diagnosed with gestational diabetes at 28 weeks along, controlled my low carb. son was born in august 2010. Had a follow up GTT, came back normal.

Second pregnancy aged 20, requested a GTT at 10 weeks along, it came back high.
Due to me having no risk factors of GD/t2 they did c-peptide and GAD. The results were borderline type 1. Put on insulin novorapid only, 16 units with meals by the end of pregnancy.
Son was born in may 2012.

The diabetes never went away, in hospital i was given a drink of orange juice and i had a reading of 11mmol.
They told me to test regular and stop insulin. Readings were 4-5mmol 1-2 hours post meals providing i ate low sugar/not too many processed carbs.

6 weeks after my baby was born i had a GTT.
Fasting 5.6, 2 hour glucose 9.8mmol (that was after walking to and from the clinic, so if i'd of been sat still it would of been higher.
The nurse told me to cut down on cakes, i told him i was borderline type 1 and he ignored that, said with those numbers there is no way i'm type 1, he also told me to lose weight, i was 8 stone at that point, not overweight at all, anyway i just cut down on carbs.

1 week after that i had the MMR jab, also came down with chickenpox, i ended up in hospital with that as i was neutropenic (low white cell count i think, i needed an injection to boost them) i was also given antivirals for the pox!
I didn't test for around 2 weeks.

the following week after that, i did a random test (after an energy drink, i'd gotten the full sugar one by accident.) reading was 26mmol. I tested again a couple of times and still similar.
I went to the hospital as i was unsure what to do. They got my levels down and started me on basal bolus. The consultant said "probably type 1 as i'm not overweight and only 20 yrs old)
Over the next week i had to reduce my insulin to 0 novorapid, and 2units of lantus. They told me to stop both as i was hypoing constantly. Readings were about 7mmol 2 hours post meals with minimal carb.

Over the next few weeks my readings got better, i'm eating a normal carb amount and my readings are about 5mmol 2 hours post meal. Fasting is around 6.5 though.

Sorry for the long post, wondering if anyone can relate? Or wondering whether you think i'm type 1 or type 2? Thanks in advance

Those BG figures are not normal in the sense that a non diabetic would not have the fluctuations you are getting.

What is certain is that you have SOMETHING and it is the job of the doctors to come up with a definitive diagnosis.

There are a battery of tests that should give them a good idea as to what is going on, and I wonder if you have had all of these?

I think you have to go back to your GP and explain what is/has happened and ask for a referal to a consultant. I doubt that he/she will refuse, they tend to refer patients when they cannot be sure what is going on and you are one of those!

I wonder if the consultant you saw was a diabetes specialist? With a few tests he/she should have been able to give you a diagnosis rather than a best guess.

Thanks Hallii, i'm still in contact with my DSN and they ring me every few weeks to see how i'm getting on. They did say i don't fit the profile for a standard type 1 or type 2 diabetic, like i'm half and half! I've looked into LADA/1.5 which seems more my profile but i thought this only occured in people older than me. I have no history of diabetes in my family, at least not close relatives, its just so bizarre! my DSN said i'm Honeymooning but my numbers settled within 2 weeks of starting insulin (i started the insulin on diagnosis on the 17th july this year, by the end of july i was off it completely with reasonable numbers (still abit off normal but providing i eat well/ not too high on carbs my numbers are normal. Example a breakfast of 2 vegetarian sausages and 2 eggs (so less than 10g of carb) will put me around 4.5mmol 1-2 hours after eating, porridge will have me around 5.5 2hours after eating.

I saw a consultant a few weeks back, mid august, again he said i'm in my honeymoon and it could last anything from a week to 2 years but rarely 2 years, but again i've had some form of diabetes since summer 2010 (which most likely went away after my first pregnancy) but re-appeared very early on in my second pregnancy.

I'm not sure if it's helpful in saying i did have an eating disorder since i was 14 yrs old, i'm recovered now but if i was type 2 diabetic, could the frequent non eating and then binging on sugar of accelerated me into being type 2? Sorry to bring the subject into it but since its related to food i wondered if it could be anything to do with my diabetes if it were to be type 2.

Thanks for your reply, it just seems to complex, and i'm constantly thinking about whether i'm type 1/2 and if i am honeymooning how long it will last.

I don't think so, most of us T2 have been overweight for long periods in our past history, and it is that fat and the way it affects the liver and insulin sensitivity that seems to be a factor in T2. Having said that there are thin T2 s so there might be other factors involved.

I do think you should push for a firm diagnosis, when you have that the doctors can offer treatment based on that diagnosis.

Depending on that diagnosis it might make some differences to some things in your life, like driving and testing, travel insurance, car insurance, life insurance, your diet and so on.

Good Luck.
