Hi.

My husband and I want to have a baby. We have a lot of barriers to get through first (not all diabetes relates) but I'm already 30 so I don't want to delay too long.

Problems are; I'm over weight. I have type one diabetes. The slightest hormonal change in my body messes my sugars up.

I've been without a diabetic nurse since my diabetic nurse left in November and I wasn't given a new one. I didn't make too much if a fuss at the time because I was doing my teacher training, so couldn't easily get time off my placement to see the nurse anyway,

Coupled with a severe drop in my testing strips allocation, the immense stress I was under, the illness and subsequent death of my mother in law and the lack of diabetic nurse, my sugars got steadily worse and worse.

I have managed to convince my doctor in increase my strips today, so I will have 200 strips a month now. Woo. But the doctor also said he won't refer me to the diabetic specialist for pregnancy until I get my sugars back under control. This week, I had been in a constant hypo.

I try to very hard. I have aspergers too, which is a form of autism. This affects what I can eat (bland food, and I tend to like the same things over and over). I have started to go swimming regularly, to try and lose weight. I enjoy swimming.

A type one friend has just had her baby, and I saw how much work she went though. So I know it will be a lot of work.

Who can advise me?

I inject, though we have been looking into getting the pump. I really want the insulin pump.

Anyway, all advice and support gratefully appreciated.

Sorry to hear you have had such a hard time recently and well done for getting through it all!

How can your doctor restrict your test strips?! If they want you to achieve good control that seems ridiculous to me.

Are they giving you support with lowering your blood sugars? If not then they should refer you to a diabetic pregnancy specialist to help with this surely?! There is guidance (NICE clinical guidance 63 - diabetes in pregnancy) which gives lots of info about how good your sugars should be etc.

Sorry I can't help more - I've not been pregnant yet so my knowledge is limited!

Thanks patch. I will look that up.

My doctors won't refer me to the specialist until I get better control, but there's been no support. My doctors is rather appalling to be honest.

Do u have to see the same doctor at your surgery?

I always find different doctors seem to have different ideas so could you discuss this with another doctor at your surgery and ask for a referral to a diabetes pregnancy specialist?

It all goes through the main doctor. I had to go private to get my diagnoses of aspergers, even though the doctor I was seeing confirmed I had it. The main doctor does as few referrals as possible.

However, I'm seeing a diabetic nurse next week (first time since November) so I will talk to her

Definitely worth asking the nurse. I find my DN much more helpful than my GP for all diabetes things. Good luck!

I don't understand why you won't get referred to a specialist when you say your doctor are you referring to your gp or your diabetes consultant ??? If its your diabetes consultant then yes sometimes they don't refer you got fertility assessment and treatment because of the risks to you and the baby. If its your gp then he/she is not qualified or specialised to manage your diabetes and you should be referred to a diabetes specialist immediately sorry if I have misunderstood your query hope this helps
