I have just found this excellent site and will take notice of the advice on it. I was diagnosed as type 2 last December (62 yrs of age) as two blood tests had shown my reading as 8.3 and 8.7. I went home and took two samples later on in the day 4.6 and an immediate test at 4.6. Then the denial set in, when I later read about the disease I found this to be a natural reaction. I was overweight but not too much and I started to check regularly and keep a list of the readings. My fasting readings have never reached 8 since except on one occasion after a huge Chinese meal late the night before. The average fasting reading would be around 7 or less.
As for none fasting, this has with the help of careful eating remained reasonable Here is a sample from my list>>>

19.7.10 10.45pm 5.1
23.7.10 10.01pm 7.4 after food
24.7.10 6.09pm 5.9
26.7.10 8.43pm 8.5 after sugary food
27.7.10 7.32am 7.3 fast
28.7.10 12.30pm 6.0
30.7.10 5.42pm 4.8
31.7.10 10.06pm 5.3
4.8.10 6.34pm 6.9
9.8.10 8.08am 7.2 fast
10.8.10 6.28pm 5.8

I am on one Metformin and one Simvastatin a day but on occasions I forget the Metformin and I noticed that after breakfast my blood sugar was spiking at 10 and above, I traced this with tests to porridge. What are doctors doing telling us that porridge is good for us? :? Apart from an over indulgence of carbs, porridge is the one thing that I have completely given up on! Does this make sence? And with readings like the example above should I be on 2 Metformin as the nurse initialy suggested? :D

It must be difficult for you to keep proper track of what your body is doing if you only take one reading a day. It's a bit hit and miss!

Could you, for a while at least, take a reading once before and twice after each meal (at 1hr and 2hrs) and make a note of what you ate and the associated readings? That way you'd know specifically how various foods affect you and you could decide what you can keep or must ditch.

Just a suggestion! There's probably lots you can do before upping your medication. If you post an example of a day's food and the readings, there's loads of people here who would help you sort it out.

Don't give up!

Thanks Dragongirl, I will do as you say but here is one day when I took several tests but did not always record the food.>>>
17.8.10 8am 7.8 fast
“ “ 10.22am 11.9 after breakfast and immediately after chocolate
“ “ 10.40am 8.8
“ “ 11.38am 9.3
“ “ 1.27pm 6.7
“ “ 3.22pm 7.8
“ “ 5pm 5.3
“ “ 8.29pm 6.8
“ “ 11.41pm 4.9

This was the first test of porridge and that is what caused the spike although the fasting reading of 7.8 was unusualy high caused I think by the previous nights supper!
Thanks for your help :) :)
