What a weekend!

Hi,

Over last few weeks I have been drinking lots of water, and over last few months I lost a bit of weight, so i did a home test after fasting on Saturday morning, came up 15.8, did it again this morning, 15.6, so decided to go to the drop in doctor who did another test and same result, before i know it I was sent to hospital where I was jabbed, had blood taken, urine/blood tests (oh by the way I have a fear of jabs which dosnt help!) So im really worried by this time, bags packed for an overnight stay on Hospital as advised by the Doc.

The hospital doc said there are not specilists in and everything seems ok (no burst blood vesels in my eyes, no pain anywhere, to be quite honest I feel totaly fine!) so they sent me home and ill get a call tomorrow, they suspect type 1 however they cant confirm just yet. better not be, otherwise ill be in a whole world of freaking out when I have more needles!

What a weekend! but I guess my trip to the hospital did open my eyes to the fact there are people worse off than me.. count myself lucky there I guess.

Anyone know if they can do no needle injections on NHS or BUPA? I have med insurance at work not sure if they will give me one of those pens, anyon use them? (asking just if.. I get confirmed with type 1)

Hi Tom
Im sorry I cant answer your questions ,but I was in high 20s when I was diagnosed although I didnt have to go to hospital it was a very scary time ,but it does get easier as you get your head round things and this forum is great for help and support .I was diagnosed as type 2 so I dont have to inject so dont despair .I hope things go well with you next week

Thanks, yes im sure ill be ok what ever the result long as I manage it well. It was just the shock, was a whirlwind in a way, I had a kind of idea I may be but it dosnt hit home till you see a doc!

The reason I went ot hospital was not for emergency reasons, more for tests and to monitor an insulin dose or 3 (so I was told) but that didnt happen,

Yes this forum has helped already, seeing so many people on here shows it is quite common, hell even my cab driver had it! We joked about welcome to the club... but i must say.. id prefer to join a sport club! (no offence)

Hello Tom, sorry to hear you've had some shocking news! Did they give you any insulin at all? I'm quite surprised they sent you home with such a high reading.

With regards to injections, I'm not too sure what you mean, if you are diagnosed as a type 1 you will be prescribed insulin which you will inject yourself with an insulin pen or if you're very lucky they'll get you on a pump. Both will be under guidance of a diabetes specialist.

Hi Tom, I have had a very similar experience myself last week. Just be glad that you know what is going on now and you are treating it. As you say there are people a lot worse off so we should count ourselves lucky. Best of luck.

no they didnt give me anything, they said as i have been ok so far, they are sure ill be ok for a couple more days. Before all this I was drinking lucozade and all sorts and nothing happened, however i will be on the no sugar drinks now... everything in my body apart from that is working as it should, kidney is ok, no pains and so on like I say so they are not overly worried but I do need treatment, which is coming very soon.

Is an insulin pen a needle? oh I thought I would have to be using those needles you use once then chuck away, thats a relief.

Here is an example of the no needle ones:

Well had some chicken for tea with salad, ill eat light till i get my appointment.

My main worry is i live alone and if somethin did happen to me down the line like a fit or something I got no backup, thats quite scary but i might be just being paranoid.

@mike944, hope everything goes good for you also. Yes i am at least looking forward to getting treatment and confirming what type i am so i can plan.

Hi Tom, at the moment you have high blood sugar so you are in no danger of having a hypo. It is the medication that brings you sugar down that can cause this. In regards to eating, you can eat as much meat, cheese (check for carbs), eggs etc as they wont raise your blood sugar. Also check out low GI foods.
