I originally thought that the fasting bloods I had done at doctors were the same as the finger prick tests I do at home are these not the same thing?

The Hba1c test (3monthly) is an average of thee last three months. Your blood cells regenerate all the time. The daily ones give an instant picture the other one is an average over a few months. I suppose you could average out your daily ones for a rough guide.
