I have read differing opinions of when the best time to test BG levels is? I an a newly diagnosed 50 year old type 1 taking rapid release 3 times a day and slow release at night. Also taking metformin 500 twice a day. I have been testing and injecting insulin before meals. But some opinions I have heard suggest it should be tested 2 hours after meals .am I doing it at the correct time as I usually eat quite late . Is there any hard and fast rule or is it mainly dependent in lifestyle, any comments would be appreciated.

Hi there,

Testing before meals is a must: you can then calculate your insulin requirements more accurately.

I usually test 2 hours after the meal and then an hour later on some days so that I can see how my Insulin to carb ratio is working with different food-stuffs and/or quantities (or if I've been doing something out of the ordinary that may affect my BG levels).

It's worth asking your DSN (Diabetes Specialist Nurse) as she may want / need you to undertake a particular pattern to gauge how your treatment is working for you...

Best wishes,
Conrad
