The puzzle that is Asperger syndrome that I still can't fit together.
I'm too angry to type much but I thought I'd do a quick summary of my appointment with the practice "Nurse"

1.She was absolutely LIVID that I dare test my blood at home after her explicitely telling me not to do so AND my GP was wrong to give me a meter and 50 strips.
2.My constant readings varying between 18 and 33mmol/l are low readings and NORMAL for type 2 and I needn't ever worry about dropping to single figures because no-one ever achieves this and if they do "They probably weren't diabetic in the first place"
3.Metformin is the BEST drug on the market and will control my bloods properly but it takes at least a year to work according to her.
4.After telling her about my headaches,chronic tiredness,vision problems,constant thirst and peeing she informs me "Oh well,you'll have to see your GP,you're OBVIOUSLY ill with another condition and will need other tests as the symptoms you just told me AREN'T consistent with Diabetes"
5.I must STOP using forums like this for advice as they are Dangerous!! in her words...
6......Well,with my chin having dropped to the floor and her getting more and more angry with me defending myself with facts I walked out completely numb!! :x
I've never heard so much **** in my life,how on earth is she qualified to work with diabetics(Or anyone else with a long term illness) is beyond me!!!

I'm supposed to have major surgery around easter time but with 'Nurse Death' being the only one at my surgery who holds clinic there's NO way I'll be controlled enough by then!!
 
Sorry to hear how unproductive your appointment was.

Print your post off and take it with you after you have made an appointment to see your G.P. a.s.a.p. She wouldn't be able to look after a goldfish and should be disciplined for her advice. Let the Dr. know what is happening to his patients.
 
I think you should consider making a formal complaint.

Points (2) and (4) are dangerously wrong. I don't know how anyone could say a reading of 18 mmol/l was normal. 33mmol/l is very dangerous. (4) are standard symtoms of uncontrolled diabetes, and she should know them.

(3) aso displays a high degree of ignorance.

Points (1) and (5) are the company line. Lots of us have heard that.

Luckily you are an informed diabetic BFP. Imagine someone less informed being told that 33mmol/l was normal for a T2.
 
bigfatpaulie - I had to read this teice for it to sink in, its hard to believe, you need to report this, my goodness, she needs to be taken to court for attempted murder!!

You are quite right to be concerned over your bg levels and forthcoming operation, your chances of infection and recovery time after the op are affected by bg levels, please try to bring them under control before you have the op. Dont listen to that Death Nurse (DN?) for one minute.

Try to eat really good, healthy food, protein, vegetables, some berries, get those antioxidants down you to give your body the best possible help to fight its way back to good health.
I hope it all goes well for you, the op and that.

PS - you will need to stop taking the Metformin tablets about 3 weeks before surgery, please do check with your doctor or surgeon, just in case that you havent been told. Please be careful.
 
Well that put's my "Nurse Nightshade" exploits of last Friday into some perspective...

I really would now just go to casualty when you're readings are high, tell them your readings and explain how ill you are feeling. I wouldn't even bother with the gp. At least at a casualty department you won't get abused.

After you get the treatment you deserve (that's got to be the most important thing) write to the practice manager and complain pointing out that it wasn't until you went to casualty that your illness was treated. See what happens then and escalate from there.

I had readings like that and I've just been diagnosed with Type 1, although I'm young(-ish) and thin so it was unusual for me to have high blood sugar. A reading of 33, even at peak after meals, could do serious damage over time. I'd call NHS Direct or any other doctors, or go to A&E. You might need specialist help.
 
Well to start with we should all stop responding...as we are obviously a bad influence on other diabetics and very dangerous people :evil:

On a serious note, what the bleep is this woman talking about. 18-33mmol are ridiculously high numbers...To class them as normal is ridiculous I am not surprised you are livid.

Chin up hun, I would consider reporting this matter immediately! If your sugars hit 33mmol and you are feeling unwell, I would, like others have said, consider A&E.

I'm also somewhat shocked by what this so called dsn has said to you. Your bg levels do need to be regulated so you do need to reduce the levels of carbohydrate that you are eating and test using a meter until l you've reached your ideal carb intake so that your bg levels stay within target range.

Your dsn should be encouraging you to lose weight by cutting back on carbohydrate and then your resistance to insulin will start to get much better.

If this dsn is giving such bad information to all her type 2 patients, then she needs reporting and a formal complaint made against her. High bg levels although tolerable with some type 2's are dangerous if left as complications over time will develop. Like others have said, if you feel really unwell with high bg levels then do go to A&E and maybe someone will be able to give you some insulin to get them down.

It is true to say though that many dsns do not like people looking at internet forums but from what I can see myself, I think many of them are being found out over the advice that they give to people.
 
Thanks guys you are spot on and I think A&E will be the next thing for me as my GP is all too quick to let the nurse deal with all things diabetes related,it's so sad that I've got to do that to get help when I believe it could be easily sorted at the practice but needs must!
I will then INDEED put a formal complaint in writing to the practice manager,for me and the other patients,some of whom,as you say,may trust her advice,think everythings going well and then buy a 6 pack of doughnuts on the way home from seeing her as a way of celebrating their good health!!! :shock:

The best way to describe how I felt earlier,well.....I don't know if any of you guys used to watch the show 'Father Ted'? well the episode entitled "Kicking Bishop Brennan up the ****" comes to mind because just like Bishop Brennan after Ted kicked him up the ****,he was speechless for ages and in a state of disbelief until he went to Rome and when he was introduced to the Pope-He suddenly realised what had happened earlier and shouted "He did kick me up the ****" Got angry and ended up knocking the pope over!!!...well I was the same,speechless for about 2 hours and then ended up ranting on here! 8)
 
BFP do you think Nurse Death and Nurse Nightshade are related?

Now get yourself to A&E ASAP and start getting the treatment you need. Let us all know how you do. If you're going tonight get there before the drunks arrive.
 
For anyone to think that these levels are in an acceptable range for someone with diabete is just i incroyable!
WIth levels of 33 and no help I certainly agree that a trip to A&E is called for.

As a side effect, I've just discovered your trip will 'cost' your practice!
Although many A&E attendances are unavoidable, GP practices should try to minimise the number of patients who attend A&E, as this incurs a cost to them

I've just looked up the NHS page for Wellingborough GPs, since I would suggest that a change might be a good idea. Interestingly most of them have good scores on the diabetes indicator ( According to the File on 4 programme this is a 'soft' target) but one only gets 74%.

Unreal, these people really need to be taken to task.

My GP was happily supplying me with test strips until the practise nurse advised him this was superfluous and a waste of his budget.
 

Hahaha! Paulie, I am most impressed at your interpretation of the reaction you had. :clap: I LOVE Father Ted.

This woman is a vile witch and needs to be sacked.
 
Its he very worst type of attitude isn't it? And the most difficult to deal with. Ignorance of the condiion -whether culpable or otherwise , is one thing but all th bluser and pigheadedness and telling you tha you were wrong in what you were doing when you were doing he righ things!
Someone should take a hidden camera into one of these sessions because unless you have experienced i personally you would assume it was exgerratoion.
! have no problem in believing abd evn visualising it.

Glados , I would have guessed yiou were a Father Ted fan from your previous posts.

Maybe someone should write a comedy series about T2 diabetes treatment. You have o laugh or you would cry. I have done both i about my treatment since diagnosis.

I acually thought I was taking part in a comedy sketch in the hospital he oher day........

I can't add anything to the shock and disgust that others have already expressed. I have just read the most disturbing post on one of the other boards where someone's GP was so incompetent, he prescribed the wrong insulin and the poster has been taking 60 units of rapid acting instead of 60 units basal :shock:

I'm starting to wonder if the GPs are on a mission to reduce the number of diabetics in any way they can - killing us off is cheaper than treating us :lolno:

I could be wrong but it seems to be "Save a few pennies today and hope for the best" with the health system when it comes to our care! :sick:

It's certainly been an 'Eye opener' for me!
 
Yes, alot of people tend to think you are exaggerrating or expect too much when you relate these incidents. They happen daily and repeatedly and as GPs are often reluctant to interfere there is nowhere for the patient to go.

In theory one could complain to the Practice manager but Pratices end to be ightly knit and I can't imagine it would be very effective. We don't all have the option to change our Gp very easily . A complaint to the Pracice Manager might get you an apology but would that help? I am sure her word would be accepted over yours and would it make her more qualified or interested? Highly unlikely in my opinion.

Complaining could well become a full time occcupation - but unpaid and futile.
 
I read your post and I felt angry on your behalf and all the other diabetics she sees who get such equally bad and dangerous information but don't know it....
