Scientists in America claim that dragonflies infected with a particular parasite undergo the same metabolic problems that cause type 2 diabetes and obesity amongst humans.
The study, published in the journal: ‘The proceedings of the national academy of science,’ was conducted by researchers at the Penn State University . Apparently, their discovery increases how far metabolic disease can spread through different species. They also indicated that studying human intestines at a microbe level could give clues to the origins of metabolic dysfunction amongst humans.
A biology professor called James Marde, and a Postdoctoral fellow called Ruud Schilder conducted the research. The study is the first to associate a non-mammalian species with metabolic disorder. Marden said: “Metabolic disease isn’t some strange thing having just to do with humans. Animals in general suffer from these symptoms.”
