Fresh figures from Australia indicate that 275 Australian people are being diagnosed with diabetes every day. The research, that came from the International Diabetes Institute show in Melbourne, raises many questions about awareness in the region.
Paul Zimmet, an expert at the institute, reveals that 600 Australians a day are being told that they are no longer overweight and are now obese . The excess fat increases a person’s chance of dying from heart attacks and stroke .
Zimmet reported of the surprise experienced by researchers when they found out that the diabetic population of Australia was leaping up by 100,000 cases every year. He said ‘one hundred thousand cases annually is the population of a small city. This is the epidemic they didn’t see coming.’
Australia, from a population just over 20 million, now has 1 million diabetics and 1.5 million pre-diabetics. The Health Minister of the country, Tony Abbott raised the point that the people were the only ones capable of solving this problem. He claimed ‘people could talk endlessly about different government programmes, but in the end it’s very important that all of us take responsibility of exercising and eating well. In the end, this is not going to be beaten by governments, it’s going to be beaten by people.’
