Eli Lilly, one of the foremost pharmaceutical companies in the diabetes field, today announced the winners of the companies annual LillyforLife Achievement awards.
The aim of the awards ceremony is apparently to: “honour the inspiring achievements of people who make lasting personal or professional contributions to the diabetes community.”
Lilly announced five different winners. These include:
– A teenage singer and actress who suffers from diabetes
– A rehabilitation counsellor who still manages to assist others despite being blinded by the disease
– A pioneer of pediatric diabetology
– The mother of a woman with type 1 diabetes
– A journalist with diabetes who founded a successful web log.
These people are inspirational for their achievements, in the face of diabetes. The winners will all receive a $1,500 cash prize and an engraved trophy. An honorary award was also given to a dog who summoned help for her owner and saved his life. The dog, ‘Belle,’ was given an engraved set of dog tags.
One Lilly spokesman said: “Diabetes can be a difficult disease to manage, but with proper blood sugar control, people with diabetes can succeed and live full, active lives. The stories of these winners should serve as inspiration to us all as we strive to improve the care of people with diabetes.”
