A research team at Stanford university have uncovered the role of a single protein in the development of diabetes. According to the team, calcineurin is the major key to the health of pancreatic beta cells, the functioning of which corrupts amongst diabetics . Pancreatic cells produce insulin.
The study was conducted on mice, and found that this unique protein acts as a regulator for 10 other genes already proven to influence diabetes. The implications of the find are enormous, and could lead to new treatments or eventually a cure.
Furthermore, the finding influences current diabetes drug treatment and operation procedures. Some immune suppressing drugs and transplant procedures are known to actively strangle the function of calcineurin. If a new series of drugs could be created that enhanced the activity of calcineuri, the researchers noted, more effective diabetes treatments would be possible.
The vice president of research for the American Diabetes Associatio, Scott Campbell, commented that: “This work has the potential to be big. This is a step in the right directio, but now we need to take it into humans.”
New treatment possibilities such as this offer the key to averting future healthcare crisis, not just in one country like American, but throughout the entire world.
