Insulin for diabetics withdrawn from market

Mon, 23 Apr 2007
Novo Nordisk, the major insulin manufacturing company, have prematurely withdrawn their Velosulin insulin product from the diabetic market. Although it is being pulled off the market early, patients have been forewarned of its termination.

The pharmaceutical company said as early as last year that Velosulin would become unavailable by December 2007. Yet many diabetics are being transferred already because it is feared the supply will run out by June.

All healthcare experts and staff are being advised that diabetics using the insulin need to take into account that the supply will run out, and be transferred to a suitable alternative by the 15th June.

Insulin is an essential part of the treatment for all type 1 diabetics, and some type 2 diabetics whose condition cannot be managed with diet and exercise .
