According to a team of scientists in American, a new pill has been created that turns on a gene that burns off body fat. Carrying out their experiments on mice, the team found that the creatures burned off fat even without exercise, and were resistant to weight gain.
For those people at risk of diseases such as diabetes, a pill of this type could provide a route to losing weight . Obesity is a major cause of type 2 diabetes, and although experts welcome anything that fights obesity, questions have been raised over whether a pill of this type can provide the same benefits as real physical exercise.
The team, from Salk Institute, presented their findings at Experimental Biology 2007. A UK expert, Dr. Karpe, of the Oxford Centre for Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism, praised the research and hoped to test the findings. He reportedly said: “There has never been a method to ‘medically’ switch on fat burning before.”
For people threatened with being type 2 diabetics, the findings have important healthcare implications.
