According to a recent report, those obese adults who have stomach surgery reduce their risk of developing heart disease, cancer and diabetes. Stomach surgery is available for the seriously obese.
The findings are expected to have a significant impact on those patients who are eligible for stomach surgery, also known as weight-loss surgery. Previously, only those people who were dangerously obese would qualify for the procedure.
In American, patients need to exceed 100 pounds overweight before doctors give the all clear for the surgery. Each operation is rumoured to cost in excess of $30,000, and nearly 200,000 Americans have now had the surgery.
The revelation that the procedure can affect the future health of the patient was conducted by two teams in Sweden and Utah. Finding the reasons behind the improvement in health is now the key for scientists.
