Warnings for diabetes drugs

Avandia and Actos, the best-selling diabetes pills in the world, are now to carry the strictest possible warning from the Food and Drug Administration.
Avandia, manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline, and Actos, manufactured by Takeda Pharmaceutical Co, carry a strong risk of heart failure. Both drugmakers agreed immediately to highlight the caution. The boxes of both drugs will now carry a black box warning.
Avandia has been a major earner for Glaxo, despite media controversy wiping considerable sales worldwide of late. It is the second biggest selling drug for Glaxo, and helps type 2 diabetics to control their condition.
The director of the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, Steven Galso, reportedly commented: “Despite the warnings and information already listed in the drug labels, these drugs are still being prescribed to patients without careful monitoring for signs of heart failure.”
