Unbeknownst to many diabetics and pre-diabetics, one of the foremost symptoms and complications of the disease is itchy and dry skin. Using dry skin care treatment, although it will not prevent the onset of diabetes, should be considered essential amongst diabetics and pre-diabetics the world over in order to avoid further damage to the skin.
The high blood glucose levels present amongst many diabetics and pre-diabetics lead to problems throughout the body, particularly if they fluctuate a lot over time. Nerve damage and loss of fluid can lead to dry and cracked skin. If left unmanaged, this can then lead to swelling, blisters, and open sores. If these become infected, the end result could even be as serious as amputation.
Dry skin remains one of the most common symptoms of diabetes, and can even be one of the ways in which type 2 diabetes is diagnosed. Traditional methods to combat diabetes, such as dietary changes, exercise and weight loss can all also alleviate dry skin problems.
Healthcare experts advise a number of skin care procedures to prevent dry skin amongst diabetics. These include drinking water and staying hydrated, washing in warm water with mild soap, and using an appropriate and safe shielding lotion.
