The diabetes problem in New York, already regarded as one of the worst in the world, has been shown to be soaring even further than previously estimated. According to the most recent reports, approximately 12.5 per cent of adults in the city suffer from diabetes, with over a third undiagnosed.
Over 100,000 people in the city are facing heart attacks, amputations, eye problems including blindness, and a number of other medical conditions as a result of poorly controlled diabetes. The new data was released by the New York City Health Department, and conducted as part of their Health and Nutrition Examination Survey .
The study was conducted face-to-face, as opposed to by phone, and revealed the amazing prevalence of diabetes in New York. The diabetes epidemic is closely linked to the obesity epidemic in New York, and the deputy commissioner of health for the city, Lorna Thorpe, reportedly said: “It’s the first time we know the true burden of diabetes among New Yorkers.”
Almost a quarter of New York adults suffer from above-average blood sugar levels, leaving them at the risk of developing diabetes. A future healthcare crisis could be looming in the five boroughs.
