The widely reported claims that Avandia causes a large increase in heart disease risk could be inconclusive, according to another study published in the New England Journal of Medicine.
Researchers in the study couldn’t be sure that Avandia, heart attacks and heart disease were associated. However, researchers found that Avandia and heart failure were strongly associated.
The heart risk of the drug hit headlines earlier this year, when another study linked Avandia and heart attack and death. The manufacturer of Avandia, GlaxoSmithKline, called the findings and report flawed due to their basis on meta-analysis.
The study was accompanied by several editorials that weigh up the positives and negatives of the drug. Whatever the conclusion of a final report, Avandia sales have taken a tumble on account of the first study earlier this year.
