Erectile Dysfunction related to diabetes could be caused by a particular defect in the brain, according to a study in America.
The mechanism that causes the defect is part of the Nitric Oxide system in the brain known as the paraventricular nucleus. The PVN, as it is also know, is located in the hypothalamus, and has a role to play in a number of different functions, including maintaining an erection and sexual activity.
Unfortunately, sexual dysfunction is a particularly common problem amongst men who have diabetes. A recent study conducted at the university of Nebraska Medical Center indicates why this is.
Using rats in experiments, the team found a particular enzyme that manufactures NO could be manipulated to increase sex drive. The findings are published in the American Journal of Physiology.
