Global diabetes forum underway

A global diabetes forum has met in New York City in the last couple of days to confront the stranglehold of the disease head on. The diabetes pandemic is the focus of discussion hosted by Novo Nordisk and supported by the International Diabetes Federation.
The speakers and delegates at the meeting include policymakers, organisations for patients, healthcare experts and the media . It is the first meeting of its type since the United Nations resolution to address diabetes in December 2006. The aim is to make the disease a global health priority and improve the way the disease is treated for the 21 million Americans thought to suffer from it.
Lars Rebien Sorense, the president and CEO of Novo Nordisk, reportedly commented: “Recognizing that there is not a single answer to the diabetes pandemic, Novo Nordisk hopes to provide a forum for identifying multiple actions at all stages to combat diabetes — from prevention to the treatment of serious complications. Only by placing the person with diabetes at the center of care and changing how healthcare systems around the world approach the disease can this silent killer be defeated.”
