The government, the policymakers, healthcare experts and food manufacturers all know that the rising incidence of diabetes is directly linked to diet and exercise . However, profit continues to govern food policy and a considerable proportion of the population simply don’t know about the importance of nutrition.
The diabetes epidemic is no more evident in any country than in American, where as many as 41 million people are pre-diabetic. These means that in the near future America could be crippled under the weight of diabetes patients, and this could lower the average American life expectancy for the first time in a century. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Preventio, for instance, one in every three children born in the United States in the last five years will become diabetic .
The commissioners of the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, Dr. Friede, reportedly commented: “Either we fall apart or we stop this. I will go out on a limb and say, 20 years from now people will look back and say: ‘What were they thinking? They’re in the middle of an epidemic and kids are watching 20,000 hours of commercials for junk food.”
