The government of Germany is set to provide 100 million Euros worth of funding over the next decade to dual diabetes and obesity research networks . The education and Research Minister, Annette Schava, presented the initiative in Berlin earlier this month.
Schavan claimed that in order for the funding to be successful, scientists had to work in closer proximity together and network better. She commented: “With this extensive support we are making a significant contribution to German research on nutrition and diabetes. From the science I hope for excellent, complementary project proposals, from which disease-oriented networks of competence can develop.”
She continued: “For this to happen it is however necessary for scientists network within their research area better than they have done, and with an eye on complications affecting the heart, eyes, nervous system and vascular system, cooperate closely with other research areas.”
Another German anti-obesity measure, ‘Fit instead of Fat’ will aim to increase food quality in schools and hospitals, as well as encouraging exercise . Healthcare costs related to obesity are huge in Germany.
