What to do in light of diabetes drug warning

Wed, 23 May 2007
Diabetics across Canada and North America are being told to ‘wait-and-see’ what the upshot is of Food and Drug Administration warnings over diabetes blockbuster drug Avandia. The FDA warned that the drug could cause heart attacks and even death following research published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Calls have been flooding in to the American Diabetes Association, and the manufacturer of Avandia, GlaxoSmithKline PLC. is denying that any heart attack risk exists. To put the concerns into context – two-thirds of diabetic people die from heart problems. As many as one million diabetics in the USA are taking Avandia.

Experts across the country are calling for more information. The ADA have released a statement encouraging diabetics to speak to their doctors before stopping any medication. The FDA has stopped short of a total recall due to ongoing studies suggesting a contradictory effect .
