Two children in America have created a diabetes comic to raise awareness about the disease and empower diabetic patients. Kamaal and Malcolm Washingto, 13 and 11 years old respectively, created Dr. Diabetes following the older of the two brother’s diagnosis with type 1.
Dr. Diabetes is an evil being who plans to infect everyone he meets with diabetes. He is green, wild-haired monster who aims to give the whole world diabetes. The comic books created by the young brothers have gained national attentio, telling the story of children who learn they have diabetes when they are visited by Dr. Diabetes. The foils to the villain’s plans are Omega Boy and Mighty Boy.
The most recent comic, the third in the series, is slated for release in July. Kamaal was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes aged nine. He reportedly commented: “You control the disease, don’t let it control you.”
The boys have sold or donated 90,000 copies of the comics, giving half of their profits to diabetes causes. The boys are planning an animated series and perhaps a movie .
