Diabetes soaring along the border

According to a new study coordinated by the Pan American Health Organisatio, diabetes is rife along the US-Mexico border. The report further states that diabetes is now the leading cause of death amongst Mexicans living along the border, and the third-leading cause of death amongst those on the US side.
PAHO analysed a large amount of data from both sides of the border, and found that type 2 diabetes is rife and increasing. As well as the 1.1 million border residents diagnosed with the disease, almost the same number again are pre-diabetic.
The chief of the PAHO US/Mexico border office, Dr. Cerqueira, reportedly commented: “It is a serious problem when nearly a quarter of border residents who have diabetes do not know their health status. It means they cannot take the basic steps to prevent the progression of the disease and its complications.”
The study also recommended steps to change the situation.
