Death risk from pneumonia could be worsened by diabetes

Those patients suffering from type 2 diabetes, or even elevated blood glucose levels (pre-diabetes or metabolic syndrome) face a greater risk of death if they are forced to go into hospital with pneumonia, according to fresh research from Denmark .
The study, by a research team at the Aarhus University Hospital in Denmark and published in the journal Diabetes Care, investigated almost 30,000 adults to glean their data.
The lead author of the study, Dr. Jette Kornum, reportedly commented: “Our results showed that glucose (blood sugar) on admission is a very important clinical indicator among patients with pneumonia.”
The study clearly found that death rates were worse amongst diabetics, concluding: “Our results also suggest that current hospitalization routines and surveillance during and after pneumonia-related hospitalization of patients with type 2 diabetes could be improved.”
