Diabetes onset starts in the heart

Pre-diabetics and those suffering from metabolic syndrome see a build up of fat in their hearts before the onset of either diabetes or heart disease symptoms. The news could have an impact on the future healthcare testing for diabetic patients, and save countless lives.
The conclusions were drawn from a new study conducted by researchers at the University of Texas South Western Medical Centre, who discovered that fat starts to build up using an imaging technique.
Applying the technique to diabetes prognosis could become reality. The imaging technique captures a static image of the human heart. Senior author Dr. Lidia Szczepaniak, writing in the journal Circulatio, reportedly commented: “Hearts beat; people breathe; and magnetic resonance imaging is very sensitive to motio, so we had to find a way to electronically freeze the image of the heart.”
The team examined fat build up amongst both obese and lean people.
