According to a US research team, aggressively using cholesterol and blood pressure lowering drugs could reverse heart disease amongst people suffering from type 2 diabetes .
A study conducted over a three year period amongst a group of almost 500 Native American adults indicated that over-the-top lowering of cholesterol and blood pressure could reverse heart damage and thickening of the arteries .
The director of the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, Dr. Nabel, was reported as commenting: “These patients are two to four times more likely than people without diabetes to die from heart disease. For the first time, we have evidence that aggressively lowering LDL cholesterol and blood pressure can actually reverse damage to the arteries in middle-aged adults with diabetes .”
However, this conclusion has generated controversy, as the extent of aggressive treatment is yet to be defined.
