According to a recent report in the diabetes news, scientists have said that they are able to control diabetes amongst diabetic mice using human embryonic stem cells . Alongside surgery and transplant procedures, stem cell research is regarded as the future of diabetes treatment .
The future might one day see embryonic stem cells used to replace damaged insulin-producing cells in the body. The scientists, based at biotechnology company Novocell, have successfully carried out the operation in mice .
The director of the Diabetes Research Institute at the University of Miami, Dr. Ricordi, reportedly commented: “For those who say there is not much evidence that embryonic stem cells can cure diabetes, there you go.”
How the research, published in journal Nature Biotechnology, affects the future of diabetes treatment, remains to be seen.
