According to a recent study, obesity surgery really could have a role to play in curing diabetes .
An Australian research team found that those patients who had surgery to reduce stomach size were up to five times as likely to witness their diabetes disappearing over a two year period, when compared to diabetics with standard diabetes care.
The study, conducted at the Monash University Medical School in Melbourne, concluded that the process was the most effective. Researcher Dr. John Dixo, reportedly commented: “It’s the best therapy for diabetes that we have today, and it’s very low risk,”
An American expert who wrote an accompanying editorial, Dr. David Cummings, reportedly commented: “We have traditionally considered diabetes to be a chronic, progressive disease. But these operations really do represent a realistic hope for curing most patients.”
Another expert, Dr. Schauer, was reported in the diabetic news of commenting: “This opens an entirely new way of thinking about diabetes.”
