According to new reports, the Baylor College of Medicine has received a federal boost to create the first diabetes centre in the Southwest. The funding is the first step in trying to find a cure for diabetes, now ranked as the fifth deadliest disease amongst the American people.

The National Institutes of Health announced this Wednesday that Baylor will be joined with some 16 other centers to receive special funding measures. The centers will also collaborate and act as a national resource.

The chairman of diabetes research at Baylor, Dr. Chan, reportedly commented: "This designation will be a catalyst. It'll grow the program, especially clinical research and diabetes-related genomic medicine ; establish new relations with people not previously doing diabetes research; and attract more research dollars ."

Baylor already has similar centers that focus on AIDS, cancer, and other diseases.
